Frequently Asked Questions about Posterjack Canvas

What is printing on canvas and why is it so popular?

  • Printing on canvas simply means that we take your digital photo or digital image and print it directly onto canvas. This is the same type of canvas that an artist would use for an oil painting, except it has a special coating for our ink. This means you can literally make you photos look like a piece of art. That is why it is so popular. It has definitely become more popular in the last couple of years because the print quality has improved a great deal, so people are totally ecstatic with the results and things have snowballed from there.

Why should I order my canvas from posterjack?

In Canada there are only two or three companies that do photos on canvas properly. Posterjack is one of them. The rest just don’t do things the way they ought to be done. Take a look at the table below to contrast how we make your canvas and the way that some other companies cut corners.

The Posterjack Way The Wrong Way
Using 100% Cotton Canvas manufactured in Canada Using polyester canvas
    Using canvas made in China
Using canvas that is manufactured with chemical brightening agents
Using Artshield Laminate to protect your print so it won't fade for 200 years Using no protection so the canvas is exposed to the elements
Using liquid laminates which look good at the start, but crack, fade and turn yellow over time
Making custom frames from Select Canadian Basswood from renewable sources Making frames from plywood or using cheap frame kits that can bow and warp over time
Printing with HP Inkjet printers in the Giclee method using Vivera archival inks Printing with solvent based printers, whose chemical inks produce inferior image quality and are guaranteed to fade in less than 10 years.
Expertly stretching your canvas and securing the canvas with galvanized staples Using canvas kits with glue and tape
Incorrectly using stretching machines which leads to rippled and uneven stretching

Can you tell me about posterjack’s canvas manufacturing process?

  • Sure! We start with a 100% cotton canvas that is produced in Montreal, Canada and is free from any optical brightening agents. It has a great canvas texture which looks great compared to many of the very flat and homogenous looking photo canvases available.
  • We use the giclee method of printing, which essentially means we use an inkjet printer rather than solvent printers or dye sublimation. Our printers use aqueous (water based) inks and are highly fade resistant.
  • We laminate every print using Artshield film to perfectly protect your print. This laminate has powerful UV inhibitors and is the best on the market. This means your print is totally protected and won’t fade for hundreds of years. You can wash your canvas with a damp rag and the canvas will be totally scratch proof!
  • Finally we expertly stretch your canvas over a wooden frame. The frame is made from Canadian Basswood sourced from renewable forests in Ontario. This is a lightweight wood that is perfect for this application because it has a low tendency to warp and bow.

Will my canvas be stretched on a frame?

  • Yes, every canvas is stretched on a 1.5” deep wooden frame that is ready to hang on the wall.

How will the edges of my canvas be handled?

  • Our default edge style is what we call a mirrored edge. This means that we take the last 1.5” of the perimeter of the photo and reflect it onto the edges. The result is that the composition of your photo is preserved on the face of the canvas, yet the image still flows onto the sides. If we think this style won’t work for your photos, we will contact you to discuss other options.

Can I add a shadow box frame?

  • We offer Shadow Box frames for most of the canvas sizes in both Black and Brown. If it is available, you will see the option to add a shadow box frame once you have uploaded your image. As you would expect by now, the frame is made right here in Canada using Canadian wood and non-toxic paint.
